NAME

Term::ShellKit::ReadMe - Reusable command-line Perl environment

MOTIVATION

It's often useful to be able to use a Perl interpreter interactively, to experiment with new code, or to perform a one-off operation. Developers often rely on a simple Perl invocation such as perl -d -e 1 or perl -n -e 'eval; warn "$@\n"'. This module provides an enhanced version of such an interpreter that provides more features commonly associated with shell processes

It uses Perl's Term::Readline to support Unix line editing conventions, including standard control characters, continuation lines, and a command history. Results of each eval are printed, or piped through a pager program if they're long (default is /usr/bin/more).

An "alias" command lets you create shortcuts for common operations, and a few default aliases are defined to let you quickly run /bin/sh expressions ("! ls /tmp") or get perldoc documentation for a module ("? LWP::UserAgent").

It also provides a "reload" command that re-reads the source code to any modules that have changed since they were last loaded, which facilitates the type of "interactive coding" under discussion. In particular, you can create an object and start working with it, then change the source code for one of its methods, reload, and use the new code, without loosing the current internal state of your object.
