NAME

Wrangler::Development - notes for developers interested in contributing

DESCRIPTION

Public repository vs. "real" repository.

As you may have found out already, the source code on CPAN - bundled as tarball - is only a subset of the files that are on the next "level", the source tree made available on github. For example, the screenshots you see in Wrangler.pm's POD are hosted on github, but the Makefile.PL does not include them in the CPAN tarball - which is to ease load on the CPAN mirrors.

On the other hand, Wrangler::License and Wrangler::Changes are doublettes of the files "LICENSE" and "Changes" which are part of the tarball already, but have been roled into Perl-modules so they can be accessed reliably from within the application. Even less optimal is the inflated storage of all of Wrangler's internally used bitmaps, originally PNGs, as XPM encoded data in Wrangler::Images. The latter is done to lift the need to reference external binary image files. Well, at least text compresses well.

Both, the text-modules and the Images.pm module have been build with makescripts on the next level up, the "real" repository, which is a superset of the github repository and currently unreleased. It's not that much: some "source files", images, notes, internal TODO docs, and scripts which are part of the build-pipeline for Debian or Windows. Some files may trickle down to the public repo eventually, but telling interested developers (you) about this multi-layered repo approach now might explain and justify some of the minor quirks of the Wrangler source-code.

PLUGINS

Wrangler currently ships with one core Plugin, Wrangler::Plugin::ColourLabels. Functionality therein has been bundled into a module to test and demonstrate the Plugin API, which is described in more detail in Wrangler::Plugin.

CONTRIBUTING

As with most Perl programs, Wrangler's source-code is open. And as such it can be modified by the user. However, we ask you to report back any bugfixes or improvements. Also, as Wrangler's license does not allow to redistribute a modified Wrangler as a whole, certain restrictions apply for submitting patches via public "forks". Please read the exact licensing terms if you want to work on the source or contribute code.

Wrangler's public repository is currently on github.
