- fix discrepancy between parsing from file and parsing from a string
  via split (had to re-add a chomp to make everything consistent). Do
  not use the previous version (1.02); it contains a nasty bug in the
  variable parsing routine which can clobber multi-line variables when
  flushed to file (the parsing works ok initally, so 1.02 is ok for
  read-only stuff).
