NAME

Role::TinyCommons::Collection::PickItems::RandomPos - Provide pick_items() that picks items by random positions

VERSION

This document describes version 0.010 of Role::TinyCommons::Collection::PickItems::RandomPos (from Perl distribution Role-TinyCommons-Collection), released on 2024-01-16.

DESCRIPTION

This role provides pick_items() that picks random items by position. It is more suitable for huge collections that support a fast get_item_at_pos (see Role::TinyCommons::Collection::GetItemByPos) and an efficient get_item_count, for example when you store your items in a Perl array (e.g. ArrayDataRole::Source::Array). If your collection does not support those methods, there's an alternative you can use: Role::TinyCommons::FindItems::Iterator.

If we get an infinite number of rows (get_item_count() returns -1), then we set item count to 2^31 - 1. If you do not like this behavior, you can provide your own implementation to handle the case of infinite array data.

Another alternative using binary search: Role::TinyCommons::Collection::PickItems::RandomSeekLines, if your items are lines from a filehandle.
